What is a blood oximeter?

Used mostly on patients with heart or lung conditions, a blood oximeter measures the amount of oxygen concentration in the blood. Read as a percentage on the screen, this device utilizes a red infrared light that passes through the skin to the blood vessels and takes the measurement based on the color of the patient’s blood and their pulse. The brighter red color it is, the more oxygen it contains. Conversely, if the blood is a bluish/purple color, it is deoxygenated.
